India has tremendous potential to become a major exporter of organic rice in the International market. APEDA made efforts to produce and export basmati rice, aromatic rice and other rice varieties by establishing model farms in states like Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
SRI Method of Rice Cultivation is Characterised by
- Cultivation of rice with as much organic manure as possible.
- Planting young at a wider spacing, in a square pattern.
- Intermittent irrigation keep to keep the soil moist but not over-watered.
- Frequent inter-cultivation with a weeder to aerates the soil.
Organic rice is grown by exploiting the natural productive power of paddy fields without relying on pesticides or chemical fertilizers. In addition, if the above conditions are not certified by a third party, the rice will not receive organic JAS certification. Organic rice is therefore carefully managed.
